Our experienced paint team have put together a step-by-step process for painting the exterior of your home. We hope you find these tips helpful & call in to our paint team who are always here to answer any questions you may have, in store or online.

Have you picked your colours?

Please come in store or contact us below and let us help you choose the perfect exterior colour scheme for your home. Our team have years of experience, with 2 colour consultants and 2 professional painters on our team. We also have 6 tinting machines and 6 types of masonry paint so you are spoiled for choice in colour and brand.

  1. Pick your main colour first
  2. Then you can pick a contrasting colour for around the doors and windows to highlight structural details. We can help you with this selection
  3. We generally then pick a third darker colour to go on the plinth and the sills for contrast - the dark colour on the plinth is very practical.

Make sure that the weather is on your side for a number of days – rain and extreme weather conditions should be avoided as it can affect the overall finish and the way paint dries and cures

First Things First

Cleaning the walls is the first step – make sure your walls are free of any dirt, fungi, mould, red or green algae or lichen. First remove as many contaminants as possible using a scraper or wire brush. We recommend treating algae or mould using a fungicidal wash. Leave the fungicidal wash on for 24 hours for optimum results. Then rinse and wash off. A high pressure wash may be required, this will also help remove any flaking paint.

Repair & Prime

Fill and repair any holes or cracks using a good quality exterior filler, make sure and remove any previous brittle damaged fillers and start afresh. Follow the recommended dry time for your exterior filler to set and harden. Identify any badly weathered/chalky/dusty areas and apply a stabilising solution. This penetrates the surface and provides a solid base for your paint. This will also provide a perfect adhesion to hold your paint to the wall. Stabilising solution is also suitable for any interior projects you may have in mind.

Final Preparations

Mask off any areas you can including around doors windows and quoin stones. Window film is brilliant to protect your glass from any splatter or drops. Use ground sheets to protect your tarmac, paths and patio areas. It's a good idea to start in the shade and move with the sun so you will have the shelter of the house for shade.

Using a good quality masonry roller, and a good Brush – roll/brush any areas that you have filled first. These will need an additional coat anyway so get their first coat on before you start the general job of work. Cut in any areas that need to be edged in – around doors and windows etc. Use an extension pole – save yourself all the reaching, bending and stretching !

Two full coats will be required for optimum coverage, finish and overall protection. If you are painting over a strong colour shade you may need a third coat.

If it is the first time your home has been painted the first coat needs to be thinned out with approximately 15% water. An additional two coats will still be required.

Make sure you have a suitable ladder & safety equipment for accessing hard to reach areas such as the fascia & soffit.
