Changing Stove Door Rope Seal

Maintain your stove with our step-by-step guide to changing your stove door's rope seal

How to replace your stove door rope seal

What is a Stove Door Rope Seal?

The rope seal seen on all stoves acts as a barrier between the stoves internal heat and external elements. It prevents air from the room getting into the stove between the joint of the door - making sure that the only air entering is through the proper air inlets. This creates an extremely efficient controlled clean burning stove which has a high heat output.

Material:

The stove rope is made of a high quality fibreglass material which is soft and easy to handle. This makes changing the rope easy to manage and it can move freely around the door when being fitted.

When should you change the rope seal?

Any stove rope seal must be replaced if it becomes frayed or split. Over time, the rope can detach from the door which is also a sign that the seal needs to be replaced.

Failure to change the rope seal when these conditions arise can result in loss of efficient heat from your stove as air is entering through the space between the door and the stove body.

What you will need:

Method:

Step 1: Remove the door off the hinges and lay it face down on a soft material e.g blanket. This will ensure that the door remains scratch free. If you have glass on your door, please make sure that there is nothing pushing up against the door from underneath that may break it!

Step 2: The new rope seal will be fitted into the groove on the door of the stove where your old rope seal is - find this area. Remove the old rope from the groove and get rid of any frayed pieces that are left behind. For stubborn old rope or tar build up that is hard to remove - white spirit, WD40 or thinners can be used (read instructions carefully and wear a mask if needed).

Step 3: When you have the groove cleaned out, place the new rope around the edge of the door seal and cut to size.

Step 4: Remove the rope again and run a continuous bead of heat resistant rope glue along the entire groove - make sure you apply enough.

Step 5: Starting at one end of the rope press into the groove, moving around until fully in place. Hold in place for a few minutes, moving around the groove and pressing into place.

The rope should now be secured and stuck - ready for use.

Step 6: Put the door back on the stove and gently close the door to ensure that it closes without excess pressure than before. DO NOT try to force the door closed.

If the door resists then something could be catching on the door - check and see.

The door should shut making complete contact with the body of the stove.

The next time you fire up the stove, the glue cures and the rope is then stuck in place!
