A small, stilted, timber garden chamber was created in 1738 by the architect William Kent, who was known for his follies, to stand in the midst of a pond in the Elysian Fields at Stowe, Buckinghamshire. It was initially embellished by the Italian painter Francesco Sleter, who used this opulent deep stone color as a backdrop while combining figurines, greenery, and calligraphy in an ornate Chinoiserie style. According to paint studies, this precious structure was painted at least twice in the 19th century and once more in 1937. After stints in Wotton, a nearby estate, and Ireland, the Chinese House was brought back to Stowe in 1996 for a thorough yet accurate renovation.

Many site-specific factors will affect the way colours appear, so it’s a good idea to test colour in more than one location, applying over as large an area as you can.
Observe the colours in daylight and artificial light; the difference can be quite significant. Avoid positioning small swatches of several colour immediately next to one another – each will affect the way the others are read. Also, try to avoid comparing the swatch to bright white – this can be equally misleading.
